What is cPanel?

cPanel is the dashboard most hosting companies give you to manage your account — files, domains, email, databases and backups — without touching a command line. If you have bought hosting in India, you have almost certainly used it.

What it actually does

A web server is a Linux machine. Everything cPanel offers could be done over SSH by editing configuration files by hand. cPanel puts a web interface over the jobs you do most often, so creating a mailbox is a form rather than a config file.

It is worth being clear that cPanel is not the hosting. It is software that runs on top of it — which is why the same panel looks identical across hundreds of hosts, and why "cPanel hosting" describes the interface rather than the performance.

The sections you will actually use

  • Files → File Manager — browse, upload, edit and extract archives in the browser. Your site lives in public_html.
  • Databases → MySQL Databases / phpMyAdmin — create databases and users; phpMyAdmin to inspect tables.
  • Domains — add domains, subdomains, aliases and redirects, and force HTTPS.
  • Email — create mailboxes at your own domain, set forwarders and autoresponders, and read mail in the browser.
  • Security → SSL/TLS Status — where AutoSSL lives.
  • Software → Softaculous — one-click WordPress and around 400 other applications.
  • Metrics — visitor stats, bandwidth, and the error log, which is the first place to look when something breaks.
  • Backup / JetBackup — download a copy, or restore one.

cPanel vs WHM

They ship together and do different jobs. cPanel manages one hosting account — the view a website owner gets. WHM (Web Host Manager) manages the server and the accounts on it: creating accounts, setting quotas, managing services.

On shared hosting you get cPanel only. On reseller hosting you get WHM as well, because you are creating cPanel accounts for your own customers. On a VPS you can install both, or run neither and manage the server yourself.

Alternatives, and why cPanel persists

Plesk, DirectAdmin, CyberPanel and HestiaCP all do broadly the same job, some free. cPanel keeps its position for unexciting reasons: almost every migration tool speaks it, almost every tutorial assumes it, and support staff everywhere know it. Familiarity is the feature.

The one genuine downside is licensing cost, which hosts absorb into the plan price. On a self-managed VPS you would pay it yourself, which is why plenty of developers skip it entirely.

Common questions

Not for the host — it is licensed per server or per account, and that cost is included in your plan. You do not pay separately on shared, WordPress or reseller hosting with us.
cPanel manages a single hosting account and is what a website owner uses. WHM manages the server and creates those accounts, which is what resellers and server administrators use.
No. It is a convenience, not a requirement — a site can be managed entirely over SSH and SFTP. Most people find the panel faster for routine jobs.
Usually at yourdomain.in/cpanel or through your client area. Your hosting welcome email carries the exact URL and your username.
