Shared hosting and a VPS solve the same problem at different scales. Most sites should be on shared hosting and are told otherwise by people selling VPS plans. Here is the difference that actually matters, and the specific signals that mean it is time to move.

## The actual difference

On **shared hosting** your site is one account among many on a server. The host manages the operating system, the web server, PHP, security patches and backups. You get cPanel and never think about the machine.

On a **VPS** you get a virtual machine of your own: guaranteed CPU and RAM, root access, and the ability to install anything. You also get responsibility for the operating system, the stack and the updates — unless you buy managed support.

The trade is control for responsibility. Not speed for slowness: a well-run shared account on LiteSpeed and NVMe will beat a badly configured VPS every time.

## Side by side

- **Resources** — shared: allocated, with per-account limits. VPS: guaranteed and reserved.
- **Root access** — shared: no. VPS: yes.
- **Management** — shared: done for you. VPS: yours, or paid managed.
- **Control panel** — shared: cPanel included. VPS: optional, sometimes licensed separately.
- **Scaling** — shared: upgrade tier. VPS: resize cores, RAM and disk independently.
- **Starting price in India** — shared from ₹49/mo; VPS from ₹520/mo.
- **Skills needed** — shared: none. VPS: comfortable on a Linux command line.

## The signs you have outgrown shared hosting

Not traffic numbers — symptoms:

- You are hitting CPU or entry-process limits regularly, and the host has told you so.
- The site slows down predictably at peak hours rather than randomly.
- You need a PHP extension, a Node or Python service, a specific database version, or a cron running every minute.
- You need root for a deployment pipeline.
- You are running an application, not a website — an API, a queue worker, a background job.
- Compliance requires isolation you cannot demonstrate on a shared box.

If none of these are true, a VPS will cost you more money and more of your time for no gain. "My site feels slow" is usually images, plugins or an overseas server — not the hosting type.

## The options in between

It is not a binary. Between the two sit **cloud hosting** — dedicated vCPU and guaranteed RAM but still fully managed, so you get the resources of a VPS without the sysadmin work — and **managed VPS**, where you keep root but we handle patching and monitoring.

For most people outgrowing shared hosting but not wanting to run a server, managed cloud is the honest recommendation, and a VPS is what you pick when you actually want the root prompt.

## Common questions

**Is a VPS faster than shared hosting?**

Not automatically. A VPS gives you guaranteed resources, which makes performance more predictable under load — but a tuned shared account on LiteSpeed and NVMe will outrun a misconfigured VPS. The gain is consistency, not raw speed.

**How much traffic can shared hosting handle?**

With server-side caching, a typical business site or blog handles tens of thousands of visits a month comfortably. The limit is usually dynamic, uncacheable requests — a busy store checkout — rather than pageviews.

**Do I need technical skills for a VPS?**

For an unmanaged VPS, yes — you are responsible for the OS, the web server and security updates. Managed VPS or cloud hosting removes that if you want the resources without the administration.

**Can I upgrade from shared to VPS later?**

Yes, and it is a migration we do for free. There is no need to over-buy at the start.
